The Pixel Launcher search bar has been an integral component of the Android ecosystem for years, and it continues to evolve. As part of the recent Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2 update released earlier this week for beta users, Google is introducing a fresh design for the search bar.
This update coincided with the official release of Android 16 for Pixel devices. While the new Pixel Launcher search bar does not look drastically different, there is one notable visual change that is likely to catch users’ attention.
The AI Mode button has been separated from the rest of the search bar. This might seem like a minor adjustment, but it is prominent enough to draw focus.
Google appears to be banking on this change to increase visibility for the AI Mode shortcut. Currently, Google has not issued any official statements regarding this change, but it is expected to provide updates once the feature rolls out in the stable version of Android 16.
Speculatively, this redesign aims to highlight the AI Mode shortcut, which has always been a part of the search bar. Previously, the AI Mode was integrated into a single, long pill-shaped bar along with other icons.
The update now segments the AI Mode button, giving it its own circular background to emphasize its importance as a distinct feature. Additionally, the repositioning of the AI Mode button to the far right of the search bar signifies its elevated status within the interface.
This alteration contrasts with its initial placement in front of the Lens and Mic buttons. While it remains unclear when this redesign will officially launch as part of Android 16, users can expect to see it later this year.
