Snap recently announced at AWE 2025 its intention to launch the next generation of its AR glasses, set for release in 2026. This upcoming model, the sixth generation, will be simply named ‘Specs’ instead of the previous ‘Spectacles.’

While Snap did not disclose details regarding pricing or an exact launch date, it indicated that the new glasses will be lighter and smaller than past versions. The last pair of Spectacles was released in September 2024 and was targeted at developers, available through a leasing model costing $99 per month.

In contrast, the Specs will be consumer-focused and run on the company’s Snap OS. Developers will have access to Google’s Gemini AI models, enhancing their ability to create applications for the smart glasses.

This marks a significant shift from Snap’s previous reliance solely on OpenAI’s GPT models. Snap CEO Evan Spiegel expressed enthusiasm for the advancements in artificial intelligence and augmented reality, which he believes are paving the way for new user experiences.

Snap’s entry into the evolving AR market comes amid increasing competition from major tech companies. Since launching the original Spectacles in 2016 for $130, Snap has transformed its product into a comprehensive AR platform.

Competing products include Apple’s recently launched Vision Pro headset, which has struggled in the market, as well as Meta’s popular Ray-Ban glasses, aimed at content creators. Additionally, Google has introduced Android XR and is developing its own AR glasses.

As Snap prepares for the release of the Specs, it must navigate a landscape that is becoming more crowded with innovative and competitive products.
