Today marks the release of the Android 16 download for Pixel users, alongside the unveiling of Android 16 QPR1 Beta 2. This is the second beta version of the new Material 3 Expressive design announced by Google last month. One of the most significant updates in this iteration is the improved Android desktop experience facilitated by connected displays.

Google first showcased this feature during the I/O event last month, explaining that “connected displays enable users to attach an external display to their Android device and transform a small-screen device into a powerful tool with a large screen.” This release enhances the previously introduced desktop windowing feature alongside several other Android 16 functionalities. Now, when a compatible Android phone or foldable device is connected to an external display via a DisplayPort connection, a new desktop session activates on that display.

Both devices can operate independently, with applications tailored to the specific display. Google emphasizes that the user experience resembles a traditional desktop environment, complete with a taskbar that displays running applications and allows users to pin their favorites for easy access. This functionality mirrors what current Chrome OS users enjoy.

For those eager to explore the new connected display support and Material 3 Expressive design, signing up for the Android Beta Program is easy. Participants can enroll their devices and will receive an over-the-air update shortly after. Android 16 QPR1 is anticipated to launch in August, likely coinciding with the introduction of the new Pixel 10 devices.

Although this update typically follows three months after the latest Android OS release, the confirmed Google Pixel 10 launch date on August 20 points to a much earlier rollout.
