Qualcomm is making notable strides in the development of AI-powered experiences through its advanced processors, with on-glass GenAI at the center of its latest innovation. This new technology integrates AI capabilities into smart glasses, creating a standalone device that doesn’t rely on internet connectivity or smartphones. While smart glasses with AI is not entirely new, Qualcomm’s approach could revolutionize this emerging segment of the tech industry, offering users immediate access to information without the need for cloud assistance. At a recent demonstration at AWE USA, Qualcomm showcased its vision for smart glasses that operate independently.

Utilizing the Snapdragon AR1+ platform, Ziad Ashgar, SVP and GM of XR at Qualcomm Technologies, illustrated how these glasses could assist users in practical situations. For example, during the demo, Ashgar used the glasses to get ingredient information for Fettuccine Alfredo while shopping, receiving quick responses in about 15 seconds. This display emphasized the potential convenience of having such technology available during everyday tasks like grocery shopping. Further enhancing the appeal of on-glass GenAI is the possibility of smaller and sleeker device designs without sacrificing performance.

Current smart glasses, while not overly bulky, still lack the sleekness of regular eyeglasses. The Snapdragon AR1+ platform promises to enable manufacturers to produce more aesthetically pleasing devices. It allows smart glasses, like the RayNeo X3 Pro, to efficiently run Small Language Models, requiring less internal hardware and enabling thinner designs. Qualcomm’s newest platform is also notably 26% smaller than previous models, which contributes to improved power efficiency and better image quality on displays.

Although Qualcomm has not provided details on product availability, the demonstration effectively served as a proof of concept, indicating that smart glasses with these advanced capabilities could be feasible in the near future.
