Samsung’s Foldable Devices Receiving Qi2, But Not the Desired Version
The upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7 will introduce Qi2 wireless charging, but there are a few caveats. This announcement might seem confusing, so let’s clear things up. Recently, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 has surfaced within the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), suggesting it supports Qi2 technology. A device identified by model number SM-D637U has been listed as ‘coming soon,’ likely indicating that it is indeed the Galaxy Z Fold 7.
Previous model numbers, such as the SM-D617D for the Galaxy Z Fold 5, align with Samsung’s approaches to label their devices, hinting at upcoming foldable phones while keeping specific details under wraps. While the prospect of Qi2 support may excite some, it’s important to note that it might not work as fully expected. Early indications suggest the device will have a limited version of Qi2 support, similar to that offered in the Galaxy S25 series. Given the Z Fold 7’s thin design, it is unlikely to feature comprehensive Qi2 capabilities, leading to speculation about a somewhat inadequate implementation.
Additionally, if the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and, presumably, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 are indeed Qi2 Ready, users will have to purchase a compatible case to utilize the wireless charging features. The phones will not include a magnetic ring, an aspect many might find disappointing. Both the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 are anticipated to launch in early July, marking a significant release for Samsung’s foldable lineup. As excitement builds, there are hopes for more robust Qi2 support in future models, such as the Galaxy S26.
