Apple launched its ProMotion display technology with the iPhone 13 Pro in 2021, making it a feature exclusive to Pro iPhone models. However, reports from February suggested that the entire iPhone 17 lineup might include this technology.
In contrast, a leaker known as Fixed Focus Digital claims that the base iPhone 17 and 17 Air models will not feature ProMotion displays. According to Fixed Focus Digital, the non-Pro iPhone variants will utilize a standard 120Hz screen, lacking the adaptability associated with ProMotion technology.
This means that while these models will have screens with high refresh rates, they will not offer the variable refresh rate that ProMotion displays provide. Digital Chat Station, another reliable source, has echoed this sentiment by indicating that the high refresh rate will be present but without ProMotion’s benefits.
The distinction between standard 120Hz refresh rates and ProMotion technology is significant. Although both offer smoother visuals compared to the older 60Hz displays—making a noticeable difference during scrolling and gaming—only ProMotion can adjust its refresh rate dynamically, ranging from 1Hz to 120Hz.
This adaptability allows ProMotion-enabled iPhones to conserve battery life by changing the refresh rate based on the content viewed. Conversely, a fixed 120Hz display maintains high refresh rates constantly, which can lead to faster battery drain.
Moreover, the absence of ProMotion means that the iPhone 17 and 17 Air will miss out on the technology’s always-on display functionality, which allows users to see notifications, widgets, and the time even when the device is locked. Regardless, a 120Hz display in the new models would still represent a notable upgrade over the iPhone 16’s 60Hz screen.
As Apple prepares to unveil the new iPhones in September, further details are anticipated in the coming months.
