The smartphone experience hinges on convenience, aiming to minimize the number of taps needed for users to access features. However, Google has introduced changes that made enabling the Do Not Disturb (DND) function less straightforward by requiring an additional tap. Fortunately, Android 16 might restore the one-tap DND functionality that many users prefer.

For those using stock or near-stock Android, you might have encountered the new “Modes” feature. Google has consolidated several options like DND, Bedtime, Driving Mode, and Sleeping into a single button in the Quick Settings menu. While this new design aims to streamline options, it has complicated access as it requires multiple taps to reach a specific mode.

This change can feel cumbersome for users accustomed to the simplicity of enabling a feature with just one tap. Recently, Google showcased its advancements at the Google I/O event and is preparing to roll out Android 16. Among the updates included in the Android 16 QPR1, there are indications that the company may revert its earlier decision.

Instead of eliminating the Modes tile entirely, Google has divided its functionality. Users can still access the Modes drop-down by tapping on the majority of the button. However, a smaller button on the left side of the tile allows for quick activation of DND mode with a single tap.

To make the most of this feature, users should adjust the “Duration for Quick Settings” according to personal preferences, setting it to either “Until you turn off” or a predetermined number of hours. In addition to the changes to DND, Android 16 introduces a similar one-tap activation for the Internet and Bluetooth tiles. This enhancement allows users to toggle these settings on or off with a single tap, further simplifying the use of Quick Settings.

With any luck, Google will retain this feature in the stable release of the operating system.
