Google has removed the waitlist for its AI Mode, making it accessible to all users over 18 in the U.S. This feature, powered by the Gemini technology, was initially launched in March to compete with rivals like ChatGPT Search. Along with the expanded availability of AI Mode, Google has introduced a one-tap search functionality for both Android and iOS users. Previously, users had to navigate through an introductory homepage when launching AI Mode from a shortcut below the Search bar in the Google app or widget.
This involved clicking on the “Ask AI Mode” field to begin typing. Thankfully, those steps are now behind us. According to *9to5Google*, launching AI Mode now directs users straight to the text input box, allowing immediate searching with the keyboard up and ready. The new interface simplifies the view, showing only the “G” logo and a close button.
However, users will notice the suggested queries carousel fades away as soon as they start typing. This change means that accessing conversation history will require more effort, as the previous homepage is no longer available. There is news, though, that Google plans to provide direct access to conversation history from the text field soon. For iOS users, tapping the AI Mode button triggers an appealing animation.
The Search field expands across the entire screen, accompanied by a pleasant four-color glow. While this animation enhances the user experience for iPhone users, Android users do not currently have this feature. In a recent blog post, Google outlined additional changes and improvements to AI Mode that users can expect moving forward.
