Google has officially announced it will cease providing software updates for the first and second-generation Nest Learning Thermostats. This decision affects devices released in 2011, 2012, and a European version from 2014.

Additionally, Google is withdrawing Nest Thermostats from the European market due to “unique” heating challenges. In light of this change, the company is offering discounts to affected users on newer models.

Starting on October 25, 2025, owners of the 1st-gen (2011) and 2nd-gen (2012) Nest Learning Thermostats will no longer receive software updates. This means remote control features via smartphones or Google Assistant will be unavailable.

However, users will still be able to manually adjust the temperature and modify schedules directly on the thermostat. The existing schedules on these devices will remain functional, and other Nest Thermostat models will continue receiving software updates.

Later this year, users can create and adjust thermostat schedules through the Google Home app for the first time. In Europe, the 2nd-gen Nest Learning Thermostat produced in 2014 will also stop receiving updates.

However, Google will continue selling the 3rd-gen Nest Learning Thermostat, launched in 2015, and the Nest Thermostat E from 2018 while supplies last. No new Nest thermostat models will be introduced in the region moving forward.

To address concerns raised by affected users, Google is offering a discount of $130 on the 4th-gen Nest Learning Thermostat in the United States and $160 off in Canada. For European users, there is a 50 percent discount on the Tado Smart Thermostat X-Starter Kit.

Google will notify Nest Learning Thermostat (1st and 2nd-gen) owners via email with further details and personalized links to access these special discounts.
