Google’s Chrome is among the most popular browsers used on Android devices, and it has finally introduced a long-awaited feature: a native PDF viewer. This change means users can now open PDF files directly within the Chrome app, eliminating the need for third-party applications. Previously, when trying to access downloaded or linked PDFs in Chrome, users were prompted with an “Open with” message that suggested using an external app like Google Drive. With the new built-in support, Chrome can now open these files seamlessly, allowing users to remain within the app.

Although this feature was first spotted in early 2022, it only became functional in December of that year, initially hidden behind certain flags until its recent rollout. The new PDF viewer includes various features for enhancing user experience. For instance, it offers built-in annotation capabilities accessible through a pencil icon. Users will find a toolbar that features tools such as a pen, highlighter, eraser, and options for undo and redo.

The annotation tools allow customization of line widths and colors for more robust note-taking. An eraser function lets users delete unwanted markings, while the toolbar can be moved around the screen for convenience. Additionally, the built-in search function allows users to quickly locate specific text within their PDF documents. As reported by Android Authority, this update is currently available for devices running Android 15.

However, the functionality may also be compatible with devices on Android 12 and later. As we await broader availability, further updates will likely clarify which devices will benefit from this new feature.
