Since Google’s announcement of Gemini, speculations have increased about its potential to replace the traditional Google Assistant. Following a multi-year development phase and significant enhancements, Gemini has recently become the default assistant on Android devices. The next major objective for Google is to integrate Gemini across other platforms, including smartwatches, cars, and earphones. Beyond Android, Google has been expanding Gemini’s capabilities into various software offerings.
Users with paid subscriptions to the Workspace suite can access numerous AI-enhanced features. As a result, Google’s artificial intelligence is now embedded in popular services such as Gmail, Google Drive, Docs, and Google Photos, providing a more enriched user experience. Interestingly, Gemini has not yet been launched on Wear OS and Android Auto, despite these platforms being ideal for an AI assistant that seamlessly interprets voice commands. It is possible that Google wanted to ensure the Android version was fully functional before rolling out an “incomplete” version to other devices.
Nonetheless, Google now considers Gemini robust enough for such integrations. In Alphabet’s recent Q1 2025 earnings call, CEO Sundar Pichai confirmed plans for this year to integrate Gemini into smartwatches, cars, and earphones. He stated, “We’re upgrading Google Assistant on mobile devices to Gemini, and later this year we’ll upgrade tablets, cars, and devices that connect to your phone, such as headphones and watches.”
Additionally, Google has scheduled an I/O developer event for May 20 and 21, where further announcements about Gemini’s expansion are anticipated. Notably, other platforms like Google’s smart speakers and Google TV await the Gemini upgrade, as they are still utilizing the original Google Assistant.
While the existing Google Assistant is commendable, providing users of these devices with Gemini would undoubtedly enhance their voice-assistant experience.
