Google has recently announced the discontinuation of the second-generation Nest Protect smart smoke detector. This decision was shared on the Google Nest Community Blog, indicating that no new units will be produced moving forward.

Additionally, the company has also halted production of the Nest x Yale smart door lock. The original Nest Protect was introduced in 2013, with the second generation following in 2015.

Although its production has ceased, Google assures users embedded in its smart home ecosystem that alternatives are on the horizon. The tech giant has teamed up with First Alert to launch a new line of smart smoke alarms, known as the First Alert Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm.

These new smoke alarms will be compatible with both the First Alert and Google Home apps, but they will not integrate with other smart home systems. Priced at $129.99, these alarms will be available in both hardwired and battery-operated models later this year, and pre-orders are already open in the U.S. and Canada.

The First Alert alarms boast several features similar to those of the Nest Protect, including automatic safety checkups and a “Heads-up Early Warning” system that sends alerts before an alarm goes off. Users can also silence accidental alarms through the supporting apps, and the alarms utilize First Alert’s advanced Precision Detection technology.

Google has indicated that existing Nest Protect units will remain available until supplies run out, and they will continue to provide support for these devices. This includes software and security updates for current users.

Additionally, reports suggest that production of the Nest x Yale smart lock has also been halted, with a new model expected to launch in summer 2025, designed to complement Nest Doorbells.
