BlackBerry was once a dominant force in the mobile phone market, not only in the United States but also globally. However, the brand discontinued its operations more than a decade ago.
In August 2020, Onward Mobility announced plans to resurrect the BlackBerry name with a new phone; unfortunately, by 2022, the company confirmed that this anticipated device would never see the light of day. Amid the disappointment, reports emerged speaking of a potential movie that would chronicle BlackBerry’s rise and subsequent fall, but updates on the brand have been sparse until recently.
A recent Reddit post has reignited optimism among BlackBerry enthusiasts. A user known as coldheartedsigma shared information suggesting that a UK-based startup is in the process of reviving the BlackBerry brand.
The post indicated that this unnamed company is negotiating with investors for funding to pursue its aims. If the claims hold true, there could be a renewed effort to bring back the BlackBerry identity to the smartphone market.
The startup reportedly plans to introduce 5G-enabled BlackBerry phones, prominently featuring the classic physical QWERTY keyboard that made the brand popular. The Redditor managed to leak a screenshot from a pitch presentation, hinting that the company is seeking exclusive rights to BlackBerry’s patents.
Although specific designs are confidential, some information has surfaced regarding the features of the proposed device. According to the details shared, the upcoming BlackBerry phone is expected to come with an AMOLED display, 12GB of RAM, and storage options of 256GB and 512GB.
It may also incorporate Generative AI features, 5G connectivity, and be powered by Android 15. Preliminary plans suggest multiple products featuring physical keyboards, though there is currently no confirmed release date.
While this news is encouraging, it is wise to remain cautiously optimistic.
