The Head of Google’s Android XR team recently showcased the capabilities of Android XR on the company’s prototype smart glasses. It appears that these innovative smart glasses will eventually be released by Samsung.

The demonstration provided insights into various features displayed on the lenses of the glasses, including functionalities powered by Google’s Gemini technology. This presentation took place at the TED2025 conference, following earlier discussions about Google’s vision for the future of augmented reality.

Google initially announced Android XR in December 2023, sharing a video that highlighted the software’s potential and its diverse applications. To further clarify the technology, Google organized a live demonstration of the smart glasses.

Shahram Izadi led the session, with Nishtha Bhatia wearing the glasses. The demo revealed how Android XR would look through the lenses and confirmed that prescription lenses will be available.

During the showcase, they illustrated how speaker notes appear on the smart glasses and affirmed that users could connect them to their smartphones to access all their apps. Notably, Gemini played a central role during the demonstration.

It generated a haiku and responded to specific questions about its surroundings. For instance, after a brief turn, Nishtha asked Gemini if it recognized the title of a book on the shelf behind her, and to her surprise, it accurately recited the title.

The presentation also highlighted Gemini’s translation capabilities, showcasing seamless communication between languages. Overall, this demo not only underscored the promising features of the prototype smart glasses but also hinted at a potential Samsung release in the near future, possibly next year.
