Samsung may be reconsidering its approach to under-display camera technology, particularly in the wake of its upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7. Rumors suggest that the Galaxy Z Fold 8, expected next year, could feature a display camera hole instead of an under-display option. This speculation marks a significant potential shift in Samsung’s design philosophy. For years, Samsung has incorporated under-display camera technology exclusively in the Galaxy Z Fold series.
The upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7, anticipated for a July or August release, will continue this trend. However, a tipster known as yeux1122 has indicated that after the Z Fold 7, Samsung might choose to abandon this feature due to challenges in improving the technology. These challenges encompass technical advancements, cost-effectiveness, and overall performance. If these rumors hold true, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 could become the company’s first foldable phone in some time to forgo the under-display camera.
This possibility is supported by the fact that the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition launched last year also excluded this technology. Critics argue that under-display cameras do not typically match the performance of traditional ones, suggesting that Samsung could provide a superior selfie camera if it accommodates a display camera hole. While this change would result in a visible camera hole on the foldable screen, users are already accustomed to similar features, such as on the cover display. Furthermore, the under-display cameras Samsung has utilized are not completely invisible, which could mitigate user concerns about this design adjustment.
Overall, any transition to a hole-punch camera design may be more seamless than anticipated for eventual Galaxy Z Fold 8 users.
