Google is introducing a new “Free TV” button on the remotes of Google TV devices, starting this month. This button will provide users with direct access to the “Live” tab, showcasing a selection of free television content from Google’s FreePlay TV app, available on all Google TV platforms. The FreePlay TV app currently offers around 170 channels and is expanding its content lineup. All Google TV devices released from this month onward will feature either a “Free TV” or “Live TV” button on their remotes.
By pressing this button, users will be directed to Google TV FreePlay, which includes a variety of Free Ad-Supported Television (FAST) channels. Some existing Google TV devices, like the Onn 4K Pro Google TV streamer from Walmart, already offer a Free TV button prominently on their remotes. Now, this feature will become standard across all upcoming Google TV streaming devices. Google has expressed that this initiative aims to create a more uniform user experience by providing quick access to free content.
However, the company has not released any specific guidelines regarding the size, color, or placement of the button. As a result, manufacturers may choose to position the button alongside other dedicated app buttons, such as those for YouTube or Netflix. The addition of the “Free TV” button is a strategic move to promote Google TV’s offerings in free television. While the FreePlay TV app is one of the initial apps displayed on Google TV devices, many users are still unaware of its existence.
Highlighting this feature on the remote may encourage increased usage. Other platforms, like TCL’s FAST TV app, TCL TV+, and popular services such as Sling TV and Pluto TV, also offer a wide range of free channels supported solely by ad revenue, making it a competitive space in streaming services.
