NVIDIA’s RTX 5090 GPU Continues to Overheat and Damage Cable Connectors
The RTX 5090 GPU is facing significant issues, particularly regarding the melting of cable connectors, which has resulted in damage not only to the GPU itself but to other components as well. This is not the first occurrence of such problems with the RTX 5090 series, causing concern about potential risks for other users. Launched with high expectations, this GPU has struggled with quality control issues and surprisingly high prices that exceeded the figures mentioned during NVIDIA’s CES 2025 keynote.
One particularly concerning incident involves a user reporting that their MSI Gaming Trio OC RTX 5090 melted its cable connector. According to a post on Reddit, the user provided photographs that clearly depict the damage to the connector connecting the GPU to the power supply. While the user indicates that this seems to be an isolated incident at this point, it highlights a broader issue with the RTX 5090: consumers may face lengthy downtimes if their unit malfunctions.
Moreover, the problems extend beyond just the GPU. The melting connector has also reportedly damaged the power supply. The user’s setup includes an ASUS Strix B650E-I motherboard, an AMD 9800 X3D CPU, and a Corsair SF1000L power supply that utilized a standard cable rated for 600W.
As of now, the user has not posted any updates regarding possible resolutions, leaving questions about warranty coverage and the effectiveness of the return process for a newly purchased and costly GPU.
