Threads, which was launched as an extension of Instagram in 2023, has evolved and now operates more independently from its parent platform. A significant development in this direction is the introduction of a direct messaging (DM) inbox, which allows users to communicate without having to rely on Instagram. The new messaging feature enables users to engage in private conversations directly within Threads.

Rather than switching to Instagram to reach out to someone, the messaging functionality is seamlessly integrated into the app. Meta has emphasized that this feature addresses one of the most requested enhancements by users, stating, “Threads was created for sharing perspectives that generate vibrant, public conversations, but sometimes you want to take a conversation further, one-on-one.” The DM feature incorporates standard elements found in messaging on other social media platforms, allowing for one-on-one chats, emoji usage, and the ability to report spam.

While the current iteration does not support group messaging or inbox filters, Meta has plans to introduce these features in the future. It’s important to note that DMs on Threads are only available to users who are either followers of the sender or mutual followers from Instagram. To send a message on Threads, users can click on the new envelope icon located in the toolbar of the home screen, which leads them to the inbox.

From there, users can create a new message by tapping the pencil icon in the upper right corner. This feature is accessible across Android, iOS, and web platforms, although it is currently restricted to users aged 18 and above. Additionally, Threads has introduced another feature called Highlighter, aimed at showcasing unique perspectives and fostering thoughtful discussions around trending topics within the app.

This feature is positioned to enhance user engagement and will expand to more areas of the app in the future.
