The HDMI Forum has officially released the complete specifications for Version 2.2 of the HDMI Specification. This announcement follows the initial introduction of the new HDMI standard at the Consumer Electronics Show back in January. The detailed specs are now available for manufacturers of devices and accessories.
HDMI 2.2 brings significant performance improvements, including support for a staggering 96Gbps bandwidth. This upgrade supersedes the current HDMI 2.1 standard, which offers up to 48Gbps. The new standard incorporates advanced HDMI Fixed Rate Link (FRL) technology, enhancing capabilities for high-bandwidth applications such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), medical imaging, and digital signage.
This means HDMI 2.2 can facilitate smooth playback of uncompressed video formats, including 4K at 240Hz, and supports higher resolutions and refresh rates, reaching up to 12K at 120Hz and 16K at 60Hz. Additionally, it offers full uncompressed chroma sampling in various color depths. For consumers, this evolution means that new HDMI cables will enable remarkably detailed visuals on televisions, making the viewing experience incredibly clear and immersive.
To help consumers identify compatible products, the HDMI Forum has introduced the ‘Ultra96’ label. Manufacturers must use this designation on HDMI 2.2 cables to indicate their capability of supporting up to 96Gbps bandwidth and 16K resolutions. This measure ensures customers are purchasing certified products that meet specific requirements.
Additionally, manufacturers will need to conduct testing to verify compliance before products can be labeled as ‘Ultra96.’ Accessory manufacturers are expected to begin selling the first HDMI 2.2 standard-supported cables by the third or fourth quarter of this year, enhancing the market with new high-capacity options.
