Creating an AI model from scratch is a complex and resource-intensive endeavor, typically accessible only to well-funded companies. This challenges many organizations in their efforts to develop advanced AI technologies. In light of this, it is not surprising that Meta at one point considered acquiring Perplexity AI and other AI firms to strengthen its capabilities. According to a report from The Verge, Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg was in discussions about purchasing Perplexity AI.

Additionally, there was interest in Thinking Machine Labs, led by Mira Murati, the former CEO of OpenAI. However, these discussions reportedly did not progress to a formal stage, as differences in business strategy and company valuation hindered the negotiations. Since then, Meta has redirected its focus and invested a substantial $14.3 billion in Scale AI, bringing its co-founder, Alexandr Wang, on board. Despite these efforts, Meta is not the only tech giant eyeing Perplexity.

Rumors indicate that Apple may also be considering acquiring Perplexity. The tech giant has faced challenges with its AI capabilities, particularly with Apple Intelligence, which struggles with even basic tasks and often relies on ChatGPT for more complex applications. Acquiring Perplexity could provide Apple with an opportunity to enhance its AI offerings significantly. Samsung has also shown interest in Perplexity, although reports suggest that it may pursue an investment instead of a full acquisition.

The company already has a partnership with Perplexity that allows eligible Galaxy users to access a complimentary subscription to Perplexity Pro. Notably, industry tipster Ice Universe has speculated that Samsung may acquire Perplexity before Apple has a chance, indicating that Perplexity is becoming a highly sought-after asset in the tech industry.
