MediaTek has recently introduced its latest mobile processing solution: the Dimensity 8450 5G System-on-Chip (SoC). This new chipset is engineered to deliver substantial performance upgrades and enhanced intelligence, specifically targeting high-performance smartphones positioned just below the premium flagship range.
The Dimensity 8450 is crafted using advanced manufacturing techniques and is packed with impressive features. Central to the Dimensity 8450 is its 8-core CPU configuration, produced using TSMC’s advanced 2nd-generation 4nm process.
This setup consists of one powerful Cortex-X4 core operating at 3.25 GHz, three performance-driven Cortex-A720 cores at 3.00 GHz, and four efficiency-focused Cortex-A520 cores at 2.10 GHz. This architecture is designed to strike a balance between high-speed processing for demanding applications and energy efficiency for everyday usage.
For graphics-intensive tasks and gaming, MediaTek has equipped the Dimensity 8450 with an Arm Mali-G720 MC7 GPU. This 7-core graphics processor, alongside MediaTek’s HyperEngine MAGT 3.0 technology, aims to elevate gaming performance, ensuring smoother visuals and an immersive experience.
Artificial intelligence capabilities are also integrated into the Dimensity 8450, featuring a 6th Gen AI Processing Unit (APU) powered by MediaTek’s NPU 880. This setup supports advanced generative AI applications and facilitates the use of Agentic AI Engine features.
Memory and connectivity are key focal points for the Dimensity 8450. It supports LPDDR5X RAM, allowing manufacturers to implement memory modules with speeds reaching up to 8533 Mbps.
For storage, UFS 4.0 with Multi-Circular Queue (MCQ) support ensures optimized data transfer and quicker app loading. The connectivity aspects include a 5G-A Sub-6GHz modem with 3CC Carrier Aggregation, enabling download speeds up to 5.17 Gbps.
Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.4, dual 5G SIM card capability, and multi-GNSS standards for precise navigation further enhance its features. The Dimensity 8450’s capabilities extend to photography and display technology.
It supports resolutions of up to 320MP through the Imagiq 1080 ISP, along with features like 4K video recording at 60 frames per second. The chipset can also drive WQHD+ displays with a fluid 144Hz refresh rate.
With a focus on power efficiency, MediaTek has incorporated UltraSave 3.0+ technology, designed to extend battery longevity. The Dimensity 8450 appears poised to enable a new era of high-performance Android devices, combining speed, advanced AI, and superior media functionalities.
Observing which smartphones will adopt this SoC will be intriguing, along with the resulting impact on their performance.
