Google has been incorporating its Gemini technology into various functionalities within Android and desktop environments since its initial launch. One of the latest developments includes the introduction of a new feature in Google Drive designed for PDF files: PDF Summary Cards.
This functionality was previously hinted at with the recent rollout of Scheduled Actions. The PDF Summary Cards open in a side panel on the right side of the screen upon viewing a PDF in Drive.
These cards provide crucial information about the document, extracting key details and presenting them as highlights. If users seek more depth, they can opt to “show more” for additional context.
Alongside this, Google Drive has introduced an AI feature that summarizes changes in shared files, reflecting Google’s commitment to integrating AI into more of its tools. The Summary Cards are expected to enhance productivity, especially for professionals using Google Drive.
They not only summarize content but also feature clickable actions derived from the PDF’s information. For example, users may engage with actions such as drafting a sample proposal or generating interview questions based on a provided resume.
Further interactions include querying Gemini for specific insights or receiving feedback options to evaluate the usefulness of the summary. The rollout of these Gemini-powered Summary Cards began on June 12, but availability may take up to 15 days, meaning some users might not access them until later in the month.
Notably, this feature is currently exclusive to Google Workspace accounts — personal accounts are not included. Eligible plans comprise various Business and Education tiers, along with specific add-ons for users with enhanced Google AI access.
Additionally, the Summary Cards support over 20 languages, including English, Arabic, French, and others, broadening their accessibility.
