Every day, you receive numerous emails that can clutter your inbox, risking the chance of missing important messages. Google is reportedly developing a small yet significant update aimed at enhancing Gmail notifications on Android devices by introducing a “Mark as read” button.
Currently, Gmail notifications on Android offer options to ‘Delete’ or ‘Reply’. However, a recent screenshot shared by a user on X indicates that Google is testing a new feature that incorporates a ‘Mark as Read’ button.
This enhancement would allow users to easily mark emails as read directly from their notifications without needing to open the app or sift through numerous messages. The user who spotted this feature reported using Gmail for Android version 2025.06.15.
Despite this, many other users with the same app version still do not see the new option, suggesting that Google is rolling out the feature to a limited group for testing purposes. Android users have been eagerly awaiting this functionality, which is already available for Gmail on iOS, making the anticipation even more pronounced.
As for when this new feature might be widely available, it’s still uncertain. Google is currently conducting tests, and predicting a release timeline is challenging.
Users may have to remain patient as the company evaluates the feature with a small set of users. Furthermore, it is unknown whether the update will be delivered through a specific app update or via server-side changes.
More information is expected to surface in the coming weeks as Google progresses with the testing phase.
