Google has confirmed that a fix for the battery overheating issues affecting the Pixel 6a will be rolled out next week, starting from July 8. This update will specifically target users with “impacted devices,” ensuring that only those experiencing problems will notice improvements in their battery performance.

The decision to implement this fix comes after two reports of Pixel 6a devices catching fire. In a statement to The Verge, Google’s Alex Moriconi explained that the upcoming update aims to reduce battery capacity on affected phones after they reach 400 charging cycles.

Users will receive a notification when their device has completed 375 charging cycles, alerting them that battery capacity will soon be lowered. Unfortunately, this update is likely to further decrease battery life, an aspect that was already subpar.

In addition to battery capacity changes, Google has indicated that users might experience other alterations, such as diminished charging performance or temporary fluctuations in how the battery level indicator displays current capacity as the device adjusts to the revised capacity. Currently, it remains unclear why only certain devices are affected while others are not.

The issue does not seem to be tied to general charging cycles but is specific to these impacted Pixel 6a. For users with affected devices, Google is offering a free battery replacement.

Eligibility can be checked through Google’s support channels. This situation may remind some users of the Pixel 4a, where Google also provided a free battery replacement or a $100 credit toward a new phone for affected owners.

Additionally, the company is running an extended repair program for the Pixel 7a due to separate issues related to battery swelling.
