The way we consume content has traditionally involved holding or sitting in front of devices like smartphones, tablets, or computers. This approach has dominated for decades, but a shift is underway. Companies are now introducing alternatives such as headsets and smart glasses.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reports that Apple aims to join the race with seven head-mounted products in development. Apple has experience in the headset market with the introduction of the Vision Pro at WWDC 2023; it was released the following year. However, the product struggled to achieve commercial success due to its high price and a lack of supporting ecosystem, leaving consumers with little incentive to purchase it.

Despite this setback, Apple appears undeterred. Kuo’s insights suggest that Apple is still working on multiple new head-mounted devices, although it may take several years for them to be realized. The first anticipated update is the next-generation Vision Pro, which will reportedly feature an M5 chipset.

Mass production is slated for Q3 2025, aiming for a release by the end of that year. Following this will be the Vision Air, with mass production scheduled for Q3 2027, and the second-gen Vision Pro expected in 2028. In addition to these headsets, Apple is rumored to be developing smart glasses reminiscent of Ray-Bans, aiming for a 2027 launch alongside a pair of XR glasses for 2028.

A display accessory is also in the works, projected for mass production by Q2 2026. Apple is not the only player in the smart glasses and headsets market. Competitors like Snap and Meta have been quick to recognize their potential, with Meta’s Ray-Bans becoming popular.

Samsung and Google are also exploring this space with Project Moohan, powered by Google’s Android XR platform. As of now, it seems Apple may be falling behind, and the hope is that by the time they launch their new products, it won’t be too late to make an impact.
