Samsung’s Health Monitor app introduced a sleep apnea feature that gained De Novo authorization from the US Food and Drug Administration in February of last year. Following its approval, the company expanded this functionality to select Galaxy Watches in the United States in 2024. Since then, this feature has been made available in several regions and has now reached a broader international audience. Recently, Samsung announced the sleep apnea feature is now accessible in 34 additional countries across Europe, as well as in Australia and Singapore.

Overall, the functionality is now offered in a total of 70 countries worldwide. The addition of the CE (Conformité Européenne/European Conformity) label for the European Economic Area facilitated this rollout, enabling Samsung to extend this health-monitoring tool to more users. The sleep apnea feature is designed to enhance awareness of sleep health. It functions as a supplementary tool, utilizing the Samsung Health app and the BioActive Sensor integrated into Galaxy Watches to detect signs of obstructive sleep apnea.

By monitoring significant disruptions in breathing patterns over two nights, the Health Monitor app can identify potential sleep apnea issues. If a pattern is detected, users are alerted and encouraged to seek professional medical advice, as untreated sleep apnea can lead to restless nights and various serious health concerns. This feature is compatible with the Galaxy Watch 4 series and later devices that run on Wear OS 5.0 and above. Additionally, users must connect their watches to a Galaxy smartphone operating on Android 12 or higher.

With the impending launch of the Galaxy Watch 8 series, Samsung may introduce enhancements to this feature at their upcoming Unpacked event next month.
