While Android’s interface is functional, a consistent design over time can become monotonous. Emphasizing the importance of continual improvement, Google has refreshed Android’s design language with Material 3 Expressive, and this new aesthetic is now being introduced to the Phone app. The Phone app is a staple for many users, particularly those who make frequent calls.

Thus, it’s one of the first native Android applications to receive this update. Currently, the update has made minimal alterations to the four-tab button bar, primarily darkening it. The “Search contacts” field remains unchanged, but notable updates have been introduced in the Recents tab.

Calls are now organized in rectangular cards with rounded corners, enhancing the visual appeal. The number pad has also seen slight modifications, featuring rounded corners on its background sheet. Another significant enhancement is in the “Incoming call gesture” settings, allowing users to select between “Single tap” or “Horizontal swipe” gestures.

The “Single tap” function is straightforward; users can simply tap the Answer or Decline button when receiving a call. Conversely, the “Horizontal Swipe” feature enables users to swipe left to decline or right to answer a call. While these changes may seem subtle, they contribute to a fresher user interface, reflecting Google’s commitment to modernization in Android.

In addition to the Phone app, Google has begun implementing the Material 3 Expressive design in other applications, such as Gmail. Recently leaked images also hint at forthcoming updates for the Pixel Camera app, though these changes haven’t been rolled out yet. As the Phone app update is currently part of the beta version 180, wider availability is yet to come, but this preview illustrates exciting enhancements on the horizon.
