Google is implementing a significant redesign of the gallery and camera interface in its Messages app. This update, which has been in testing since November of last year, is now being widely rolled out to users equipped with the stable version of the app. Once the redesign is fully deployed, users will notice some substantial changes.

When tapping the gallery icon in the text field, the interface will no longer display a half-sheet that includes both a live camera and recent images. Instead, users will be greeted with a full-screen viewfinder that occupies the upper section of the screen. The lower part will showcase a grid of 3 to 6 of the most recent images.

Users can swipe up to expand the gallery completely, with a ‘Folders’ shortcut conveniently positioned at the bottom, leading directly to the system photo picker. Additionally, a blurred background preview will appear after taking a photo or selecting one. A new feature allows users to write a caption before sending their images, while the trash icon has been relocated to the bottom-left corner for easier access.

Moreover, the app’s interface will display ‘HD’ or ‘HD+’ icons in the app bar. The ‘HD’ option optimizes image quality to reduce data usage during transmission, while ‘HD+’ ensures that images are sent in full resolution. The rollout of these updates is independent of a specific app version, as it is likely supported by a server-side change.

Users should ensure they have the latest version of the app installed and await the changes as they become available.
