Apple has introduced its Apple Intelligence features across most global markets, with one notable exception: China. Although Apple has attempted to launch these AI tools in the country, they continue to face delays, primarily due to the ongoing trade tensions between the United States and China. A recent report from the Financial Times highlights that Apple and Alibaba have submitted their applications to the Cyberspace Administration of China for approval, but these requests have stalled amid rising geopolitical uncertainties. These delays indicate that the issue is less about Apple’s adherence to local regulations and more about the political climate between the two nations.

As this situation evolves, Apple users in China will have to wait longer to access Apple Intelligence. Interestingly, recent commentary suggests that the features may not offer significant advantages, indicating that consumers might not be missing out on too much. In contrast to other markets where Apple Intelligence is readily available, Apple had to adapt its strategy for a successful launch in China. To comply with local policies aimed at restricting data flow outside the country, Apple has partnered with a domestic tech firm, Alibaba.

Initial reports indicated that Apple might collaborate with another company called DeepSeek, but further developments confirmed the partnership with Alibaba. The delays in launching Apple Intelligence in China are indicative of broader geopolitical issues. The Trump administration’s implementation of high tariffs on Chinese imports has resulted in reciprocal measures from China. Additionally, there have been pressures on Apple to shift iPhone production to the US, a move Apple has deemed impractical.

Although there is no definitive timeline for the introduction of Apple Intelligence in China, local AI companies like DeepSeek, Alibaba, and Tencent provide a range of alternatives for consumers in the region.
