Google has announced and released a stable build of Android 16 today. This update is currently rolling out to Pixel phone users.

However, for those who prefer not to wait, there is an option to manually download the necessary files and sideload Android 16 onto their devices. For those considering manual installation, both OTA files and factory images are now available for those familiar with the process.

The staged rollout means that not everyone will receive the update at the same time, prompting some users to take matters into their own hands. Understanding the difference between OTA files and factory images is essential.

If you’re not well-acquainted with these installation processes, it might be wise to bide your time and wait for the official OTA update. It’s important to note that one of these installation methods will completely wipe your device data.

Sideloading via a factory image will erase everything from your phone, essentially giving you a fresh start with Android 16, but at the cost of all your data. Alternatively, using an OTA file will allow installation without data loss, assuming you’re coming from the stable version of Android 15.

Make sure to download the correct files for your specific device, whether using factory images or OTA files. Android 16 introduces a variety of new features, although it does not include the Material 3 Expressive design, which Google has confirmed will be released later this year.

Nonetheless, Android 16 enhances notifications with new options similar to OnePlus’ Live Alerts, providing timely updates for things like food deliveries without needing to open the app continuously. Additionally, the update includes Advanced Protection, Google’s strongest mobile device security measures, alongside improvements for productivity on tablets, making for a substantial update overall.
