At the recent Google I/O 2025 event, Google made several exciting announcements related to Android, Gemini, and other offerings. One of the highlights was the introduction of new features for the Android Auto platform, which will soon include support for Gemini. Additionally, Google revealed new media app templates in the Android for Cars App Library, allowing users to initiate or join Spotify Jam sessions directly in their vehicles equipped with Android Auto. Spotify recently launched Jam, a feature that enables users to create personalized, collaborative playlists with friends.

Until now, this functionality was limited to the Spotify app on smartphones, desktops, and TVs. However, Google’s partnership with Spotify will bring the Jam feature to vehicles using Android Auto and cars with Google built-in, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable listening experience. To support this integration, Google introduced a new Media Playback template that allows app developers to design a Now Playing view with customizable interactions. There is also a Sectioned Item template that facilitates content discovery and browsing while minimizing driver distractions.

These templates enable developers to recreate the familiar experiences found on mobile devices within the Android Auto environment. Users can expect the arrival of Spotify Jam on Android Auto later this year, as these media app templates are already available. Once the Spotify Jam feature is implemented, users can easily modify shared playlists via their smartphones after joining through a QR code displayed on their vehicle’s infotainment system. This will reduce the task load for both the driver and front passenger, allowing all occupants to control media playback and discovery without needing to be close to the infotainment unit.

In addition to Spotify Jam, Android Auto will also soon support video streaming and browser applications, with Google currently testing these features for a future rollout.
