The landscape of foldable smartphones is on the verge of transformation, with Samsung Display preparing to begin mass production of displays for the company’s first tri-fold phone. Production is anticipated to commence as early as June, paving the way for a potential launch in the latter half of the year. Early reports suggest Samsung Display aims to produce between 200,000 to 300,000 of these tri-fold panels initially, with the possibility of increasing output based on market demand.
Samsung has been researching this technology for several years and has showcased it at various display-focused events. Sources indicate that the first tri-fold smartphone may be branded as the “Galaxy G Fold.” Given the advanced technology involved, it is expected to carry a high price tag, likely comparable to existing premium models like the Huawei Mate XT.
Because of the cost, Samsung might limit the initial launch to select countries before expanding availability based on consumer response. The success of Huawei’s Mate XT, with approximately 400,000 units sold globally since its introduction, demonstrates a clear demand for high-end foldable devices. In this growing interest in foldables, Samsung is well-positioned to profit significantly.
The company has accumulated extensive experience in display technology, and its dominance in the OLED market could lead to substantial revenue generation. Samsung Display is not only focused on the Galaxy G Fold but will also supply panels for the forthcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7, expected in July. Furthermore, there are indications that Samsung could become the exclusive supplier of display panels for Apple’s anticipated foldable iPhone, set to launch in 2026.
As the foldable phone market is projected to grow significantly in the coming years, Samsung Display stands to benefit from the increasing innovation and competition in this space.
