If you own Meta’s Ray-Bans smart glasses, it’s important to review your privacy settings. Recently, the company notified users that AI features will now be activated by default on their devices.
This means that Meta AI will analyze photos and videos captured with the glasses while certain AI features are active. Moreover, voice recordings will be stored to enhance product development, and currently, there is no option to opt out of this data collection.
It may sound alarming, but the smart glasses do not continuously record and store everything while being worn. If they did, the battery would drain within an hour, which it does not do—battery life is already a concern.
The glasses only store speech that is detected after the user activates the device with the wake phrase “Hey Meta.” Previously, users could refuse to allow Meta to store their voice recordings, but this option has been retracted.
However, users can still prevent Meta from training its AI with their voice data. If you prefer not to have your voice recordings retained, you will need to manually delete each one through the Ray-Ban Meta companion app, now rebranded as Meta AI.
Deleting your voice recordings is a straightforward process. Simply open the Meta AI app, tap the gear icon next to your glasses, go to “Glasses Privacy,” then select “Voice Activity Log,” and tap the “Delete all” button.
However, it’s worth noting that there is currently no option for automatic deletion of these recordings from the glasses or the app. Meta retains these recordings for up to one year to enhance its AI products, so you should remember to delete them periodically to manage your privacy effectively.
