Google is currently developing a “tiny taskbar” for Android phones, inspired by the larger taskbar used on tablets and foldable devices. This new feature aims to enhance multitasking capabilities on traditional slab-style Android phones. Although the “tiny taskbar” is still in the works, it promises a convenient upgrade for app switching.
The planned design includes a small carousel of applications situated at the bottom of the screen, just above the taskbar. This new feature serves as a compact version of the recent apps menu, enabling quicker app transitions. Many, including tech enthusiast Mishaal Rahman from Android Authority, see potential for this feature on foldable devices such as the Pixel 9 Pro Fold.
Despite ongoing efforts, it appears the “tiny taskbar” will not debut with the upcoming Android 16 release. There has been no confirmation of its inclusion, given that Google has already issued the final beta version of Android 16. However, Rahman points out that this does not mean the project is abandoned.
Features occasionally appear in beta versions only to be postponed or refined for future releases. It is feasible that the “tiny taskbar” could be introduced in Android 17 or even in a Quarterly Platform Release later this year. Additionally, Google might hold off on the feature for a significant redesign associated with the Material 3 Expressive update expected in the near future.
The introduction of this new taskbar would significantly benefit slab-style Android phones, and many users eagerly anticipate the final iteration from Google.
