Leaked images of an ASUS-manufactured Xbox handheld have surfaced online, offering a glimpse into the design of this upcoming gaming device. It’s important to note that this is not Microsoft’s own handheld console capable of running Xbox games natively.
Instead, it is an Xbox-branded handheld developed by ASUS, which was initially mentioned earlier this year. The key distinction lies in the device’s operating system; it will run on Windows, enabling users to access a range of PC games.
Despite this, the device will carry the Xbox branding to highlight its compatibility with Xbox game services. Codenamed Project Keenan, the ASUS handheld is anticipated to be released sometime this year, although ASUS has yet to make an official announcement about the device’s launch.
The leaked photos, reportedly obtained from the FCC, reveal that the new Xbox handheld closely resembles the ROG Ally and ROG Ally X in aesthetic. However, there are some notable modifications.
One significant change is the inclusion of a dedicated Xbox button that facilitates quick access to games, particularly through platforms like Game Pass. The grips also feature a redesigned and more pronounced form, resembling classic game controller grips, which improves ergonomics.
This is interesting as ASUS previously highlighted changes in ergonomics with the ROG Ally X, suggesting that refining comfort remains a priority. According to the leaks that were first identified by 91mobiles, the handheld will be available in two variants: one black model branded for Xbox and a white version.
While they share a similar look apart from the color and logo on the dedicated button, internal specifications reveal differences in chipsets. The Xbox-branded version is likely to house a Ryzen Z2 Extreme chipset, with a power rating of 36W, whereas the white version will have a less powerful 4-core chipset rated at 20W.
Overall, this indicates that the Xbox variant will not only be more powerful but also likely more expensive. The exact release date remains uncertain, but the recent certification activity hints at a possible launch soon.
