Google has started rolling out a redesign of its Search widget for Android, marking a minor yet noteworthy update. This widget is associated with the Google app on Android devices, providing users with quick access to web searches. Although this redesign isn’t radical, it introduces some significant tweaks that affect its user interface.
The previous widget design featured four icons organized within a pill-shaped container. The Google logo was on the left, accompanied by three icons on the right, which included a shortcut, a microphone for voice input, and an option for Google Lens. The new design, however, adopts a layered appearance with a pill-shaped container inside another similar shape and a circular container on the far right.
The larger container showcases the Google logo on the right along with the voice input icon and Google Lens options. Meanwhile, the custom action icon has been separated into its own circular container on the edge, changing the overall design dynamics. The good news is that users can choose to disable this custom option, resulting in a simplified look without the separate container.
In terms of size, the new widget is slightly taller than its predecessor, aligning with the Material 3 design principles that favor thicker search fields and a container-based organization. The background container maintains a degree of transparency, adding a modern touch to the interface. It is also important to note that in order to display all four buttons, users must keep the widget set to a 4×1 width; a 3×1 width will only show three.
Tapping the Google logo will launch the Google app. This update is associated with Google app version 16.19, but as it is a server-side rollout, users may not see the changes immediately even if they have the same version installed.
