Google recently announced an upcoming virtual event titled The Android Show: I/O Edition, scheduled for May 13. The event promises to showcase the latest updates in the Android ecosystem. Attendees can look forward to gaining insights into the final release of Android 16, which is anticipated to be launched on June 3. A teaser for The Android Show hints at what’s to come, featuring Samat preparing for the show.
The recording is reportedly taking place at the Google Store on their Mountain View campus. While further details can be found on the event’s page, the anticipation surrounding the announcements remains high. According to Sameer Samat, President of the Android Ecosystem at Google, Android developments have always been a significant aspect of Google I/O. He expressed excitement about kicking off this year’s I/O season with a deep-dive event tailored to Android, which aims to prepare audiences for the broader announcements planned for I/O, including unexpected surprises.
However, this pre-event may suggest that there will be limited Android-related news at the actual Google I/O. In the previous year, the keynote revolved primarily around AI for over two hours, and a similar focus is expected this year. Google has assured that Android will still be highlighted at Google I/O, with updates provided during keynotes and technical sessions for developers. There are also expectations that Material Design 3 will be introduced, which will certainly encompass Android.
The virtual event will not be live but will be streamed at 10 AM PT and 1 PM ET on May 13, available as a pre-recorded video on YouTube Live.
