OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently announced that the launch of GPT-5 will be delayed. While many AI enthusiasts have eagerly anticipated the next generation of OpenAI’s models since the announcement of GPT-4o nearly a year ago, the release of GPT-5 is now pushed back. Although the definitive launch is expected in 2025, it won’t happen immediately.
Altman’s announcement has disappointed fans, but there is some silver lining. The company has faced recent outages, a situation exacerbated by a significant surge in user engagement after ChatGPT gained the capability to generate images. This increase in users has made it challenging for OpenAI to maintain server performance.
With hype surrounding the company reaching peak levels, the delay of GPT-5 is indeed a letdown for many. Altman shared on social media that GPT-5 will be released “in a few months,” signaling that while the wait will be prolonged, something is still on the horizon. Regarding the reasons for this delay, Altman indicated several factors, particularly issues with integrating the new model.
He emphasized the need “to ensure we have enough capacity to support what we expect to be unprecedented demand.” It’s a bold claim, yet given GPT-5’s potential impact, it’s virtually guaranteed to overshadow any other AI announcements at the time of its release. In the meantime, OpenAI plans to launch two new mini models, o3 and o4. These reasoning models are anticipated to be quite powerful and will be available to users in just a few weeks.
Despite the wait for GPT-5, these upcoming releases provide a welcome opportunity for AI enthusiasts to engage with new technology.
