In 2021, T-Mobile experienced a significant data breach that compromised the personal information of 76 million customers in the United States. Due to negligence surrounding the breach, T-Mobile agreed to a $350 million settlement in 2022. After a prolonged wait, the company has finally announced plans to compensate affected users.
Beginning next month, eligible T-Mobile subscribers can expect to receive their settlement payments. Reports suggest that some individuals may receive payments smaller than $25. However, those who can substantiate that the breach caused them substantial financial losses will have their claims prioritized, potentially receiving up to $25,000.
Customers who were notably impacted by the 2021 breach need to provide evidence of financial losses, particularly related to the time spent securing their accounts. Additionally, T-Mobile will reimburse users for any expenses incurred on credit monitoring services aimed at mitigating losses from identity theft. The distribution of settlement payments is expected to commence in April.
T-Mobile has already reached out to eligible customers in 2022. Affected individuals should check their email for notifications from T-Mobile regarding their share of the settlement from the class action lawsuit. For those who could not provide documentation of out-of-pocket losses, payments will be capped at $25.
However, T-Mobile subscribers who were based in California during the August 2021 breach can receive as much as $100. Claimants will have flexibility in choosing how to receive their payments, with options including direct bank transfers or paper checks.
