The Pixel Watch has long featured media controls that allow users to manage playback with a few simple taps. However, a recent Wear OS software update is introducing enhanced functionality, rolling out to devices now. This update promises several new controls that were previously unavailable, increasing convenience for music playback directly from the smartwatch. Currently, users can pause, play, skip tracks, and adjust the volume, which, while useful, falls short compared to the extensive controls available in most mobile music streaming applications.

The new features aim to enrich the media experience on the watch, allowing for more comprehensive control over playback. According to 9To5Google, the update will include additional media playback controls. However, they may not yet be visible on all devices, including my own Pixel Watch 3. Google appears to be implementing these changes gradually, so availability may differ among users.

This means checking for updates on your individual device may be necessary to access the new features. In some cases, these controls are not appearing in popular apps like Spotify, which could be due to compatibility issues rather than an incomplete roll-out. The report suggests that while the controls may be visible, they may not function in every app, indicating that this upgrade is still in progress. The new controls are organized into two buttons on the watch interface.

One button on the left resembles a music note with three lines next to it and grants access to the Up Next queue, displaying the next 24 songs. This feature seems to work seamlessly with YouTube Music, but its functionality with other apps remains uncertain. On the right side, an overflow button allows for shuffling and repeating tracks, along with a thumbs-up feature to express enjoyment of a currently playing song. Users are advised to ensure the Wear Media app is updated via the Play Store to access these new features.
