OmniVision has entered the competitive market of 1-inch image sensors with the introduction of the OV50X, a high-performance 50MP sensor featuring 1.6-micron pixels. Designed specifically for flagship smartphones, this groundbreaking sensor promises exceptional dynamic range and video capabilities, aiming to deliver the industry’s highest standard in mobile photography and videography. The OV50X could begin appearing in flagship smartphones by the end of the year. The OV50X stands out as the world’s first 1-inch sensor equipped with TheiaCel technology, which enhances performance in various lighting conditions.

This advanced sensor can capture an impressive 18 stops of dynamic range and record 8K video at 180 frames per second. With these features, OmniVision positions itself alongside industry leaders like Sony and Samsung, preparing to challenge their existing 1-inch sensors and high-resolution offerings, including Samsung’s 200MP ISOCELL. A significant feature of the OV50X is its support for 4-cell binning, which allows it to produce 12.5MP images while performing 3-channel HDR recording at 60 frames per second. The design of the sensor focuses on the needs of professional videographers and photographers, ensuring high-quality output in diverse environments.

Additionally, the OV50X incorporates Quad Phase Detection (QPD) autofocus, which provides rapid and reliable focusing, even in challenging lighting scenarios. Capable of recording “movie-grade” videos, this sensor achieves close to 110 dB of dynamic range, a remarkable feat for smartphone cameras. Built using PureCel Plus-S stacked-die technology, the OV50X excels in low-light conditions as well. OmniVision plans to commence mass production of this innovative sensor in the third quarter of 2025, with smartphone manufacturers currently testing it for future flagship device integration.
