Nintendo has announced that games for the upcoming Switch 2, distributed through game-key cards, will not be linked to individual Nintendo accounts. This change allows players to resell, share, or rent their games, as any Switch 2 can play a game-key card inserted into it.
This contrasts with the current Nintendo Switch system, where digital purchases are tied to the buyer’s account and cannot be transferred. During a recent Nintendo Switch 2 Direct event, the company showcased the new game-key card system, which is designed to replace the traditional digital download codes.
Previously, when users purchased a digital game, they received a code that was redeemed on their account, locking the game to that profile. With the new game-key cards, users will enjoy greater flexibility, including the ability to lend games to friends easily.
In an interview with GameSpot, Tetsuya Sasaki, a Nintendo representative, confirmed that the game-key cards would be compatible with any Switch 2 console, enabling a truly shared gaming experience. This change addresses a major issue with digital games: the inability to trade, resell, or lend them.
For instance, if someone completes a game and no longer wishes to keep it, they can sell the game-key card to others or through platforms like Facebook Marketplace. While an internet connection is required for the initial game download, players can subsequently enjoy offline play.
However, the game-key card must remain in the system during gameplay, similar to physical game cartridges. One notable advantage of the game-key card system is in allowing retailers to sell games exceeding the 64GB storage limit of traditional cartridges.
This feature is particularly helpful for larger titles, such as Cyberpunk 2077 and Final Fantasy VII Remake, ensuring a physical edition is available at launch. The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to release on June 5, featuring a diverse lineup of launch games.
