Apple’s approach to device support differs significantly from Android’s, where manufacturers explicitly outline the duration of support for their devices. While Apple hasn’t formally stated its support policies for iOS, iPhone users have generally enjoyed a minimum of five years of updates. However, recent rumors suggest that iOS 19 may not support certain models, namely the iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max.

An anonymous source reported that the devices eligible for the upcoming iOS 19 include the iPhone 11 series, iPhone 12 series, iPhone 13 series, iPhone 14 series, iPhone 15 series, and the latest iPhone SE models. This list, while extensive, notably omits the three older models mentioned earlier. Notably, this speculation contradicts earlier claims by iPhoneSoft, which suggested that any device compatible with iOS 18 would also support iOS 19.

The narrowing list could indicate a shift in Apple’s support strategy. Considering that the iPhone XR, XS, and XS Max were launched in 2018, these devices have enjoyed six years of support, which is commendable for any tech product. With dwindling ownership numbers, the impact of dropping support for these models may not be significant.

In addition to device support updates, iOS 19 is rumored to feature a substantial redesign, potentially the most significant since iOS 7. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple aims to enhance consistency across its platforms, ensuring that the experience with menus and icons aligns more closely between iOS and macOS. Contrary to expectations, Apple is not expected to introduce major Apple Intelligence features; rather, the focus will be on deeper integration of existing features within native applications.

More information, including device support specifics, is expected during the WWDC 2025 announcement in June.
