OpenAI’s ChatGPT features several distinct models, each capable of handling basic queries with ease. However, when it comes to more intricate tasks, such as conducting research, specialized tools like Deep Research are necessary.

Recently, OpenAI announced that it is expanding access to ChatGPT Deep Research and introducing a new lightweight option to enhance user experience. Initially, Deep Research was available only to ChatGPT Pro users, which is a premium subscription costing $200 per month.

Later on, OpenAI extended access to users under the Plus, Team, and Enterprise plans. The new lightweight version of Deep Research is now available to all users, significantly increasing query allowances.

Plus, Team, Enterprise, and Edu users can run 25 queries per month, while Pro users can access 250 queries, and Free users have a limit of 5. This enhancement is enabled by a more cost-effective version of the o4-mini model.

So, what exactly distinguishes the lightweight Deep Research from its full version? According to OpenAI, the lightweight variant operates on the o4-mini architecture and is said to be “nearly as intelligent” as the full version.

While it provides shorter responses to manage processing costs, OpenAI assures users that these responses will retain the same depth and quality as the full version. Despite the advantages of using tools like Deep Research for initial research and topic exploration, it’s crucial to conduct thorough verification of the information obtained.

AI systems, including ChatGPT, have demonstrated tendencies to fabricate information, a phenomenon known as “hallucination.” This limitation applies to all AI models, highlighting the importance of critical evaluation and cross-referencing when relying on AI-generated content for research purposes.
