A recent patent filed by Google introduces a wireless charging system that operates through the display of a smartphone. This innovative technology could pave the way for new applications of wireless charging, though its practicality remains questionable. Google, typically recognized for its software prowess rather than hardware innovation, has recently ventured into intriguing territory with this patent for wireless charging via a smartphone’s screen.

Traditionally, wireless charging utilizes a coil embedded in the back of compatible smartphones to initiate power transmission when in contact with a charger. While various wireless charging standards exist, the concept of charging a device through its display raises interesting considerations. The patent, identified by technology analyst Xpertpick and filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, outlines a mobile device with the wireless charging coil placed beneath the screen. This setup bears similarities to under-screen biometric systems but serves the purpose of facilitating wireless charging.

It could enhance the versatility of charging methods, as users would be able to place their phones on a dock either face up or face down. The technology might even enable wireless power sharing directly through the screen. According to Google’s patent, when a compatible charger is detected, the phone would disable the screen and touch sensors to optimize power transfer. Adjustments to the screen’s protective layer would further enhance efficiency.

Despite the potential benefits, many users may find this feature impractical. The prospect of charging a smartphone face down could hinder visibility, and with existing wireless charging docks designed to display information while charging, the demand for such technology appears limited. Consequently, its success in the market seems uncertain.
