Google has officially launched version 135 of the Chrome app for Android. This update introduces an edge-to-edge design that enhances the browsing experience on Android smartphones. Notably, the solid gesture bar that previously occupied part of the screen has been removed, allowing web content to extend fully to the bottom of the display. A similar update for Android tablets is expected to follow in the near future.

Last month, Google shared information about testing a new version of Chrome designed to maximize screen space for a more engaging experience. Now, with the official release of version 135, users can enjoy this immersive browsing feature. The change was first noticed by tech site 9to5Google shortly after they installed the new update via the Google Play Store. Users are encouraged to update the app to take advantage of the edge-to-edge design.

In the previous version of Chrome, the colored gesture navigation bar was visible while scrolling through web pages. However, after updating to version 135, this bar is now positioned above the webpage, creating a more engaging environment. Importantly, although the update does not allow for additional viewing of webpage content, it aligns with the current trend of Android apps adopting similar edge-to-edge designs. When the page initially loads at the top, the background remains visible.

Users will notice this behavior remains unchanged when scrolling back up. However, as users scroll down, the gesture bar becomes transparent, allowing the webpage to reach the bottom of the screen. Google has indicated that the Chrome app will display a “dynamic bottom bar,” also known as “the chin,” which adapts based on scrolling behavior. The UI update enables the content to extend right to the edge of the device.

Currently, this new edge-to-edge design is only available for Android smartphones that utilize gesture-based notifications. Users who still rely on three-button navigation will not experience these changes. The company has noted that a similar update may be on its way for larger devices like Android tablets.
