The challenge with foldable smartphones is that many apps remain unoptimized for these devices, limiting the ability to fully utilize their larger screens. However, Gmail users have reason to celebrate, as Google has introduced an update that enhances its layout specifically for foldables and tablets. With the new update, when you use Gmail in landscape mode on foldables and tablets, the app now divides the screen into two sections.

One part displays your list of emails, while the other shows the contents of an open email. While this arrangement is generally effective, users often desire more flexibility, whether it’s for viewing more emails or maximizing the content display. The update addressed these needs by introducing an adjustable divider within the Gmail app.

This allows users to modify the size of each window according to their preferences. You can now drag the divider between the list view and conversation view, creating either a single pane or a two-pane experience. This feature is particularly advantageous considering the varying screen sizes of different foldable devices.

Additionally, this update is accessible to all Google Workspace customers, individual subscribers, and personal Google account holders. If you haven’t yet seen the new feature, ensure you’re on version 2025.04.13.x of Gmail for Android to access it. Notably, this adjustable divider is also available in other Google applications like Google Chat, raising hopes that Google may expand this functionality across more apps in the future.
