Meta’s Ray-Ban glasses are currently regarded as the best smart glasses on the market. Although they lack augmented reality capabilities, they offer a stylish design that seamlessly integrates with everyday attire and remain relatively affordable. Rumors suggest that Meta is developing a version featuring a built-in display, while Apple aims to surpass them with its own innovations.
Recent reports indicate that Apple is working on smart glasses that will leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance user experience. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter, Apple’s upcoming smart glasses, codenamed N50, aim to incorporate AI technology that will analyze the wearer’s surroundings and relay valuable insights. However, the development appears to be in its early stages, with Gurman noting that the device is not yet ready for the market.
The specifics of how AI will be integrated into the glasses remain unclear, and it seems we may face a long wait before this concept becomes a reality. Apple’s track record with its existing AI features raises skepticism. During WWDC 2024, Apple promised significant advancements in its AI system but has struggled to deliver on those commitments.
Issues such as inaccurate notification summaries and an overdue Siri update have contributed to doubts surrounding the tech giant’s capability to make its smart glasses the next big sensation. Additionally, Apple’s Vision Pro, while technologically advanced, has faced challenges in terms of accessibility and market receptivity. Its high price point puts it out of reach for many consumers, potentially leading to a disconnect regarding the advantages of smart glasses.
With Meta reportedly developing multiple pairs of upgraded smart glasses, the competition is heating up. If Apple intends to keep pace, significant effort will be required to turn its vision into a competitive product.
