There are compelling arguments for both matte and glossy displays in devices. Glossy displays tend to make images appear vibrant and lively, but they often struggle with reflections, which can be off-putting. This is where matte displays shine, effectively reducing glare.
This contrast made the rumors surrounding Apple potentially introducing anti-reflective displays for the iPhone 17 Pro particularly exciting. Unfortunately, those rumors have been put to rest. Reports from reliable sources, including MacRumors, indicate that Apple has decided against implementing anti-reflective displays in the upcoming iPhone 17 Pro models.
Speculation about the new display had emerged as early as 2024 when Instant Digital hinted that Apple would release a more scratch-resistant anti-reflective coating compared to the current Ceramic Shield. However, it appears that challenges in scaling up the coating process have led to this decision. The delay could impact production, as Apple typically manufactures millions of devices each year.
It’s disappointing that the iPhone 17 Pro will not feature this display upgrade. Apple has previously embraced anti-reflective technology in its Mac and iPad Pro lines, where it is regarded as a premium enhancement. Notably, the Pro Display XDR with nano-texture glass commands a higher price due to its improvements.
Currently, iPhone models do include a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating, but that primarily addresses smudges rather than reflections. In contrast, competitors like Samsung have already implemented effective solutions, such as the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s Gorilla Glass Armor display, which can significantly reduce reflections. While it remains uncertain whether this setback signifies the permanent shelving of anti-reflective displays, there is always the possibility they may appear in the iPhone 18 series.
For now, we will need to stay alert for further developments.
