Android 16 Helps Resolve Hinge Issues on the Pixel Fold, Providing Essential Improvements
Android 16 Beta 4 has introduced a new feature known as “robust open/close detection,” specifically for the Pixel Fold and Pixel 9 Pro Fold. This enhancement allows these devices to more accurately recognize their folded state, particularly when used with magnetic accessories like MagSafe. This feature aims to eliminate glitches that can occur due to hinge sensor interference, which has led to unintended screen transitions in the past. To utilize this feature, users can navigate to the Settings app and select Display & Touch, where the option can be found at the bottom of the menu.
However, it is important to note that employing this feature may result in increased battery consumption, potentially affecting overall battery life. The final release of Android 16 is anticipated in June. Although Google just rolled out the last scheduled beta for Android 16, the stable version is expected to be available shortly after June 2. Reports have indicated that the Android 16 version will be available on AOSP by June 3, with a rollout to Pixel devices soon afterward.
While the update may not seem significant at first glance, it mainly consists of under-the-hood improvements, including the robust open/close detection feature. As in previous years, many user-facing features are slated to be released through future Pixel Feature Drops rather than in the initial Android 16 rollout. Overall, the update reflects Google’s ongoing efforts to enhance user experience, particularly for its specialized foldable devices.
